Who am I? Call me Paul Evans. I have about 30 years experience in the daily newspaper business. I have worked as a reporter, photographer, and editor for features and news. ?For the last few years I have worked for a large metro daily that has won every major award in the business. That and a few backs will pay my salary next week. I like to think I have some understanding about what is happening to our industry. But to be honest, I’m guessing a smart, computer-savvy 13-year-old could do more to save this business than just about everyone I work with (myself included). Despite all the depressing news about what is happening to the newspaper industry, I remain defiantly idealistic. I think this country needs what newspapers do (when they are doing best what they ought) and that many will recognize that eventually. I’m just not sure there will be much left in the way of American newspapers by the time people start to figure that out. But I’m not going to sit quietly by. I’m going to have my say about what newspapers are doing wrong, what they could do right and why this country needs real journalism now more than ever.
